Packing List – What to bring to your Volunteering experience!

Having the right equipment and clothes can make a big difference when volunteering. Here is a quick packing checklist we’ve put together for you, so you can be perfectly prepared for your next adventure with us.

Kaneohe Bay

  1. Appropriate clothes for the project.

If you join one of our restoration projects such as our Hike above Waikiki or at the Lyon Aboretum for the invasive species removal project,  we recommend light clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. We also recommend long sleeves to protect your skin from scratches, bugs, and the sun. Bring clothes to change and a rain jacket.

Closed shoes are required as you’ll be hiking and working in nature, and you’ll need your feet covered to stay protected. Work gloves are usually provided on site.

For our ocean-related activities such as Helping the Wounded Warriors, Biking & Kayaking in Kailua after Cleaning the Beach, or Paddling an Outrigger Canoe, we suggest to bring beach clothes.

Also pack a towel and sun protection, as you surely will be enjoying the turquoise blue waters.

Yogis, join our classes and come in your most comfy clothes, bring a towel or a yoga mat, and a long sleeve shirt or blanket in case it gets a bit chillier during savasana.

  2. Water & Snacks

Your refillable water bottle and some snacks are always a good idea, as you want to stay hydrated during the work day. Some of our volunteering events include lunch, others don’t. If you want to eat somewhere authentic after your adventure, find our favorite spots here.

  3. Bug Spray.

We love animals, also bugs, but if you join our hikes and restoration projects, a bug-spray might make your life easier. We love the organic and all natural stuff, such as Badger Anti Bug Balm or natural essential oils such as citronella, peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus, basil, clove, thyme, lemongrass, geranium, and lavender

  4. Sun protection.

The sun is always strong in Hawaii, even on a cloudy day. Protect your skin by applying reef-safe sunscreen.  Wear a hat, sunglasses, long sleeves, bright colors, and stay in the shade as much as possible. We prefer the products by Little Hands Hawaii, Raw Love Sunscreen, or Raw Element.

  5. Camera.

Your camera so to post your coolest pics on Instagram. Tag us & use the #travel2change  to share your favorite photos from your volunteering day with us. Another great idea is to bring your business card or contact to share with other volunteers you will meet.
